Dear Author, First and foremost, thank you thank you thank you for volunteering to write for me. I will try to give you sparks for ideas, but I'm a pretty easy cookie to please, so if you had a fic you really wanted to write that doesn't quite fit with any of my suggestions, please write the fic you wanted to write. That tends to work out better for everyone in the end.

First off, thank you, oh author-mine, for volunteering to feed my id. My thoughts here are a little meandering and messy, but I hope they provide good fodder for you to use.

It also occurs to me that I never posted the fics that I wrote for Yuletide (and the New Year's Resolution I posted after Yuletide was over).

Here they are. Two are elfporny goodness based on an old Mercedes Lackey Bard's Tale novel tie in. One is a missing episode of Community filled with Renaissance Faire shenanigans.

Death and the Dancing Girl
Fandom: Bard's Tale/Castle of Deception by Mercedes Lackey
Pairing: Naitachal/Eliathanis
Teaser: Death is no barrier to a necromancer.
Rating: Elfporny, Nec-romancey

Music and the Mad Maudlin
Fandom: Bard's Tale/Castle of Deception by Mercedes Lackey
Pairing: Naitachal/Eliathanis
Teaser: Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.
Rating: Even MOAR Elfporny, Moar nec-romancey, totally a fix-it fic

Survey of Medieval History
Fandom: Community
Pairing: Gen, all characters
Teaser: The peasants are revolting when Greendale hosts its first Renaissance Faire.
Rating: Revolting, but PG

I wrote a World of Warcraft fic for an exhange, and it has now gone public. It is chock-full of Lore with a little soupçon of porn to wash it down. Read it here:

A Swatch of Red
Fandom: World of Warcraft
Pairing: Mathias Shaw/Edwin VanCleef
Teaser: It takes a long time to build a friendship, and only one betrayal to end it.
Rated: Explicit; Loretastic; Alliance Dogs
teleidoplex: (Default)
Edit to my anon author: I am SO sorry I never made this visible!  Please feel free to ignore everything here, since it didn't get posted until way late. Trust me, I'm so very easy to please with any of these pairings :)

Request 1
Koltira Deathweaver/Thassarian

I love these guys. Any point in their relationship is fine, and you can take it from bromancy to necromancy and all shades in between. Bonus points for hot sex, angst, and/or the two of them playing Alliance/Horde animosity against itself.

I usually have a really strong squick around non-con, but in the case of Death Knights, part of the thing I LOVE about them is that they're always subject to the whispers of the Lich King (Arthas or Bolvar, doesn't matter. A benevolent mind-controller is still a mind-controller!) If you have any interest in exploring the tension between what Koltira and Thassarian feel for each other, and the demands/expectations of their Master, that would be lovely. Especially something where the boys might want to be kind/loving/romantic/consensual with each other, but the mind-control injunction to cause pain/harm/trauma/heartbreak is something that is constantly causing tension and making them act other than they would (or having to fight against it/understand).

I don't know if I articulated that very well, but those are my fuzzy thoughts.

Request 2
Asric/Jadaar

Banter banter banter. These guys are the softer, living side of Thassarian/Koltira for me.

In this case, the whole violence/non-con thing would really not work for me, and non-con in particular would fell squicky and totally out-of-character.

Mostly, I want more banter and adventure-avoidance. However, if you want to give me backstory, or have them get dragged unwilling into an adventure, that could be a lot of fun. Basically, I see them as similar to Vladimir and Estragon from Waiting for Godot, or Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern from R&G are Dead - that is... more commenting on the world around them and only participating unwillingly. So yeah, they might be a good pairing for snapshot interactions, rather than a fully-developed story.

Request 3
Any Character

Go to town. Give me the crackiest crackfic ever to crack the world. Give me fourth-wall breaking crack. Give me crossover crack. Give me sexy, well-written crack.

My only squicks are non-con. I'm not usually fond of M-Preg, but I don't think I can make any such restriction when I've just asked for crack :)

Request 4

Write-in request for Matthias Shaw/Edwin VanCleef. Is that even possible? I missed the noms. ::weeps::

I love VanCleef, and I think he has a totally legitimate beef against Varian Wrynn and the nobles of Stormwind. He rebuilt their fricken city, and they didn't pay him or his workers because they're cheap assholes. Man, I want the Defias to tear that shit _DOWN._

But of course, Matthias Shaw can't let that happen. That is a recipe for epic, tragic conflict.

Bonus points for VanCleef kicking Wrynn in the junk, whether actually or symbolically.

It's all because I forgot to bring my lunch today.

I was standing in line at my work's cafe, waiting for my grilled cheese to go with my tomato soup, when Flashdance... What a Feelin' came on.

Before I knew it, I was absently bopping my head and mouthing along.

Before the song ended, I had an overwhelming desire to watch the film again. I mentioned this to a co-worker. He pointed out that Flashdance is on Netflix. Nooooo! I thought (and said) Noooooo! It will be bad. It will be so bad. It will be [title-redacted-so-as-not-to-hurt-[livejournal.com profile] maladaptive 's-feelings] bad!

And then I thought... well... if it's really bad, I can wash away the bad with the awesomeness of The Avengers (I've been on a Loki/Thor kick recently).

And THEN I thought... I could write an Avengers/Flashdance crossover fic where the Avengers have to go undercover as Flashdance dancers for some contrived reason, dancing ridiculously over-choreographed routines that no actual stripper EVER performs! In bright costumes! To cheesy 80's tunes!!

Just... just imagine: Hulk smash! Water... SPLASH!!

::wibbles::

I... I might HAVE to do this.

I'm sorry to the world.

Let this be an object lesson. NEVER forget your lunch!

Reveals are up! So now I can post links to what I wrote and talk about the process, etc.

I wasn't going to do Yuletide this year, because I really wanted to finish the first draft of Chiaroscuro, but then I saw that someone had requested fic for Castle of Deception, which is an old Bard's Tale (pc game) tie-in novel by Mercedes Lackey and Josepha Sherman. It introduces one of my longstanding favorite characters (who... may have been the template for Jessmindara Duskwalker >.> ), the Dark Elf Bard, Naitachal.

Don't judge.

So I signed up, my recipient ended up asking for just about EVERYTHING I LOVED ABOUT THOSE BOOKS, and I not only ended up writing almost 9k of fic for her, but I'm working on two sequels. Yeah... I got ravaged by a rampaging horde of plotbunnies.

If you're interested in reading plotty fix-it elfporn for a fandom you've never read (but don't _really_ need to have), feel free to check it out here:

So, I'm sitting there on December 23rd, polishing up my fic and getting antsy for Yuletide to start, and I get an email from the organizer. A pinch hit had gone out in early December for Community. I had only just finished mainlining the entire three seasons on Hulu, so I offered to write for it, but someone beat me out. Turns out, that second someone had _also_ defaulted, and could I possibly still write something?

I look at the clock. I have 24 hours, give or take. I look at my to-do list. I have Allison's novel to edit, Chia to finish, a second CoD fic I've already started, and two days off from work.

Sure! I say. Because that is the crazy Yuletide spirit. Over the next day, I proceed to write in script form an entire episode of Community. I post that to beat deadline, and I spend the 24th, right up to deadline, adding dialogue tags and action descriptions. I beat the archive opening by about 5 minutes. I accidentally call Dean Pelton 'Dean Pelham' in the first line, which I don't discover for a few days, but that was my only major 'doh~!' moment.

I'm really glad I ended up doing this, because while I love what I did for my official giftfic, I knew it was a small fandom and wouldn't get many hits beyond my recipient. The last-minute Community fic I wrote ended up being a blowout hit (thanks in large part to the size of the fandom). I got hits! I got Kudos! I got enthusiastic comments! It filled that need for acknowledgement that -- I don't care how altruistic you are -- we all crave at Yuletide.

So if you want to go read that one, you can check it out here:

Snowed In
Rating: Explicit
Fandom: Oglaf
Relationship: Greir the Lesbian Mercenary/Snow Queen (Oglaf)
This is my second year of requesting this pairing, and my second year of winning Yuletide. The author captured everything I love about the source material. She hits that sort of good-natured bullshit-calling voice that is so very, _very_ Oglaf! Her Grier is confident, competent, and independent, and I could seriously follow her on any adventure she went on. Her Snow Queen is spot-on lovely and cheerful in the face of her loneliness, and the interactions between the two are steamy. I want to hug the final line of the fic. Always.

It Ends in a Small White Room
Rating: Teen and Up
Fandom: Pushing Daisies
Relationship: Chuck/Ned
I would say the spot-on voice for this fic is the best thing about it (and it is definitely pitch-perfect), but even that is edged out by the twisted lengths of thought the author went to in considering how rational (and unethical) science would study the Pie-maker's gifts. This is a chilling fic with an oddly-upbeat ending.

Entropy
Rating: Teen and Up
Fandom: Darkangel Trilogy – Meredith Ann Pierce
Relationship: Aeriel/Erin
My favorite little-known fandom got two excellent fics this year, both very different, but both very happy-making in their own ways. This one follows the adventures of Aeriel and Erin after the books as they gather pearlstuff, and I particularly appreciated how the author was able to capture the feeling of entropy and loss in her prose.

Sons for Every Daymonth
Rating: General Audiences
Fandom: Darkangel Trilogy – Meredith Ann Pierce
Relationship: Gen
The second of my Darkangel recs, and I have to say that although I've read these books a hundred times at least, this one caught me by surprise and made me consider an aspect I had never really thought about before. It's just a series of vignettes about the boys who each in turn became the Witch's sons, but each one is chillingly awesome in its own right.

If the Fates Allow
Rating: Teen and Up
Fandoms: The Rocketeer/Captain America
Relationship: Cliff Secord/Jenny Blake; Steve Rodgers/Peggy Carter
How have I never considered this crossover or desired this fic? This is the fic I didn't know I wanted. The author captures the patois of The Rocketeer and Captain America films so well… and now I want to go watch these two films back-to-back and dream of a shining, all-american golden soldier and his reckless and slightly madcap pilot buddy… and their two awesomely brave and just-as-heroic ladies.

No Harm Ever Came from Digging Up the Past
Rating: General Audiences
Fandoms: Bone Key – Sarah Monette, The Mummy Series
Relationships: Gen, but focuses on Evy and Claudia
Archaeology crossover FTW! Awesome ladies being Awesome! Howard Carter/Lord Carnarvon/Real-life curse of Tut's tomb! Nancy-Drew style investigations except more awesome! And by someone who clearly knows their archaeology stuff. My main sadness is that this team of lady archaeologist-adventurers isn't canon. Someone go write me canon lady archaeologists. Stat!

Dear Author,

First and foremost, thank you thank you thank you for volunteering to write for me. I'm not going to hit the obvious ones. If you haven't read the Octopus-steals-camera fic or the Tough Guide to Yuletide fic yet... you should.

But here's some excellent ones you might have missed:

Fandom: Oglaf
Title: Fun (For Fun and Profit)
Why it rocks: This was my gift fic, so I suppose I'm pre-disposed to loving it, but you know how you so rarely get exactly what you wanted for Christmas?  Well, I did get exactly what I wanted. An excellent fleshing out (heh) of the mercenary character as she investigates whether she is really impervious to fun. The author got the mercenary's voice _exactly_ as I'd expect it to be - scoundrel with a heart of something that might be gold except that she'd sell it if it was. Her interactions with the villagers of Meltwater had me in stitches. I have so much love for this piece that I think it deserves love from everyone else.

Fandom: The Last Unicorn
Title: Growing Together
Why it rocks: This could be a hard fandom, because the voice of the book is so unique - charming and wise and witty without being smug. Also, the story ended just where it should, so where do you go from there? This fic manages to toe the line on both those issues. The voice is everything I could want from a Last Unicorn fic, and the story is the one story I didn't know I still wanted to know. Just damn lovely.

Fandom: Twisted Princess (Disney Fanart)
Title: 待龙纹身的女孩 (Dài lóng wénshēn de nǚhái)
Why it rocks: The Mulan pic is one of my favorites of this fandom, and the fic does not disappoint. Everything about it is <i>guh>/i>-worthy, from Fa Mulan's role in her society, to Li Shang's reactions to her as he comes to recognize her for what she is.

Fandom: Tough Guide to Fantasyland
Title: A Special, Limited-Time Offer
Why it rocks: The Yuletide meta-fic guide has been getting a lot of (well-deserved) love, but don't overlook this one! It takes on the issues of Gritty Fantasy (tm), and it's the kind of funny that is painful because it's true.

Fandom: Ship Series
Title: Chess, Charades, and the Body in the Next Room
Why it rocks: I think Alex and Tia's romance might be one of my favorites of all time, and this is an excellent continuation that explores the issues of her new embodiment during a little mini-adventure that felt very much like an epilogue adventure to the original. Very in-keeping with the tone of the rest of the book, and there's even a cameo from Fred!

Fandom: The Silver Metal Lover
Title: Cut Me Out In Little Stars
Why it rocks: This is the other top candidate for my favorite romance ever. This fic is heartbreakingly good. The author takes us into Silver's head, and while I was hesitant to follow because we never go there in the book, I'm so glad I did. NGL, I cried. If you loved this book... you need to read this story. If you don't know the book... argh... you should probably read the book first, then come back and read this.

Dragons in WoW are lore appropriate, and dragons hiding out and observing the populace are also lore appropriate. That doesn't mean creating a player character who is secretly a dragon isn't intensely problematic and probably very mockable. As with anything, I suppose it comes down to execution.

I know one person who had achieved good execution on this, so this character concept is partially her fault. My love of Doctor Who is the other culprit; much like the Doctor, Xan is a revolutionary who finds humans fascinating and disagrees with the standing policy of non-interference. Or, as moonandserpent has pointed out: "She'll make a wonderful Infinite someday."

Yeah... well, we all know that Nozdormu hied himself off to become the leader of the Infinite Flight anyways. Xan is just "Vollowink in her Grandvathers vootschtepps!"

Really...
