Hey everyone. So, a few weeks ago I posted that I was going to be organizing a political flyering event. That event is taking place this weekend, and I would love it if people would show up. We'll be meeting at Sample Gates on Saturday at noon, after which people will disperse in small groups to go flyering around Kirkwood, the Town Square, and maybe over to the Fountain Square Mall area. The event will be done by 4:00 at the very latest (for those of you going to Ben's game).

My goals are threefold, and I think it's a good idea for me to be explicit about them, because they greatly affect how I'm planning on organizing this event.

First, I think one of the most important ways to get people to support Dean in the primaries is to offer them solid information about the primaries. Many of the people I know don't usually vote in primaries because they a) aren't registered, b)don't know when or where they should vote, or c)don't know much or anything about all the candidates, and therefore don't see any differences between them. Therefore, one of the handouts we'll be distributing will have this information on it. There will be info on how to register, when the primaries will be, where people can go to find out about voting, and a listing of all the current candidates with their website url and a brief blurb.

This listing of candidates is my second "goal". I'm pro-Dean, but I think that proselytizing can easily turn people off. I'd rather give people good information and let them make their own decisions. It seems to me that this is the only way to get supporters that are firm in their understanding of *why* they support someone, and therefore firm in their support. Maybe I just hang out with cynics too much, but I'd rather have an informed voter base than one that changes whenever a new name emerges.

I will, however, have the regular flyer that is put together by Dean's people for us to hand out. I am pro-Dean, after all, and I do want to make it easier for people to have information on him. If anyone disagrees with my political stance and doesn't want to hand out the information sheet, then I have no problem at all with them just handing out the Dean flyer (or vice-versa, if you want to give out general information, but are not a Dean supporter).

My third goal is to make sure that there is some follow up. I'm going to have sign-up sheets for everyone to carry, in case they run into people who want more information, want to help out next time, etc. I'm planning on stepping things up closer to the primaries, perhaps by working with campus political groups to run voter registration tables, etc. I would also welcome other suggestions, and other people who want to organize something.

Finally, I'm a graduate student, so my time is finite and becomes moreso as the semester progresses. I also have difficulty making it to meetings and the like. If anyone knows of other Dean groups around Bloomington that are already doing public outreach, please let me know about them. I'm doing this mostly because I haven't noticed anybody else doing it, but I'm notoriously oblivious, so I might have missed it ;>

Thanks, and see you Saturday at noon at Sample Gates.

A Humble Offering

Greetings,
I have recently stumbled upon your journal as I have excess free time to wander about this website. (I was looking up those with Gilbert and Sullivan musical interests when I came upon your journal.) I am afraid I have a long lived love of them.

I am sorry for intruding into your journal but I have a few questions. Why does someone who is a self-proclaimed ninja lover go about doing such hard work for political candidates? Would not your work be more suited to subterfuge and skullduggery. (I do so love using that word.) Your passion is very misguided if you do not mind me saying so. And you do this for free!?! Bah, I, The Fangdango, Dr. Fangdango, would not only pay you for your very Kitsune/Ninja abilities but offer boarding in my humble home within the mountains. In exchange, you could do work for me that I assure you would find pleasing. Please, think it over. I might be able to create an opening or two within my organization.

Sincerely,
Dr. Fangdango
