Dreams and Riddles
Jan. 30th, 2003 09:36 pmBe where you are. I had a dream last night where I got my "well-known zen riddles" confused. It was remarkably enlightening in the way that dreams are, where you "get it" in the dream but wake up utterly confused and pretty sure that the feeling of "getting it" has a lot more to do with somnolence than enlightenment. I was in my own mind (being where I was in the truest sense of the concept), and the riddles were there as well. I'm fairly sure they were being recited by James Earl Jones (who I'm pretty sure was *not* in my mind). The two riddles were "If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound" and "what is the sound of one hand clapping", but somehow I (and Mr. Jones) fused them into "If someone claps in the forest, does it make a sound". I impressed myself utterly when I thought-replied "Of course. It makes a sound to the person who is clapping." I was very disappointed when I woke up and realized that I had not, in fact, solved two of the unsolvable riddles in one fell swoop.
