This was one of my favorite DVD purchases of the past year. I can certainly see why some didn't like it though. Was it the philosophy or the story of the movie that you didn't like?

The characters. I found it difficult to sympathize with what appeared to me to be a rather 2-dimensional existential crisis.

I thought it ended up working out rather well. I enjoyed the movie. It's one of those situations where I'm pleased ideas like this is brought to to fore rather than worrying about whether people are having the right kinds of existential crisis. What may be "a rather 2-dimensional existential crisis" to you is probably something many people have never before considered.

I'm not worried. People are welcome to whatever kinds of existential crises they desire (or don't desire). My disappointment lies mainly in expectation. For the most part, the film was appreciated by several people whose taste I normally agree with, but this film left me feeling bored, flat and unchallenged philosophically, which was definitely *not* what I expected. A lot of that had to do with the characters -- or rather, caricatures. I suppose I'm invested in the idea that real people are more interesting and complex than what was portrayed in the film. I think that while the film is aiming for an intelligent satire, what it gets is a rather flat and sophmoric portrayal of what searches for meaninfulness (or chaos for that matter) really can be in normal individuals' lived experiences.
