Feb. 10th, 2003 01:10 pmI suck. No profound thoughts or even any attempts to practice my daily anthro journaling. Just another quiz. Quizzes are actually an interesting phenomenon, I guess. I'd be curious to know how other people take them. How do they answer? Do they frustrate themselves over the fact that none of the given answers really fit, or do they pick the answer that is most humorous to them, even if it describes their imaginative landscape rather than their behavior? Why do some people post lots of quizzes and others none at all? Why do people choose certain ones to share? Do they see it as a quick, abbreviated sharing of oneself (a self that has been shoehorned into categories that didn't really fit, or that is more one's playfully imagined self)? Why do some quizzes catch on and become a public meme? Why was the dreamchat list inundated with people's pirate names instead of discussion about the upcoming invasion from Apples? Is it easier to take a quiz for one's character than oneself? Is it because we know our characters better than ourselves, or just because we are innately more complex, and our characters are in many ways as simplistic as the quizzes? Or is it because our characters, as part of our imaginative landscape, are released from the cultural inhibitions we place on ourselves (we may fantasize about bathing in virgin's blood, but would we answer that we do so if given that option on a quiz?) Who writes these quizes, and why?
Well, more rambling questions than rambling thoughts. I'd be interested in knowing what the attraction is for other people. They're such a simple, unimportant, and yet fascinating part of internet culture, yet with their roots in lots of other structures (magazines, astrology, psychology, etc.) But now I must go to dance class. In the meantime, here is my WOD tradition. This one was a lot more easy to answer, so maybe it's more accurate. I dunno.

Silly Student Quizzes are for people with time
Date: 2003-02-10 11:06 am (UTC)So you got me hooked on this whole LJ thing, I am using to free write on Guatemala as well as other things that fill my head. I am worried that it will become a time vampire though. As far as thoughts on Quizzes go, I think perhaps they are a way to share something about oneself with others, although you bring up a good point that its a self crammed into a box which does not fit, however the quiz answer is a least partially reflective of the person taking the quiz. I really don't know though why, perhaps people like quizzes on the internet because they are easier then quizzes in Magazines, after all the internet quiz keeps track of your answers and gives you your feedback instantly and is harder to cheat on. If you have ever taken a cosmo quiz then you know what I mean about the cheating.. you look at the answers (as in answer mostly A's then you've got a winning personality..B's A man Killer...C's get a makeover) and try to stay away from those answers that will get an unwelcome result.

And dreamchat has long ago degraded into essentially an lj community. Membership is optional, and you'll miss nothing important by not belonging. We all belong, only members can post and read, but the only thing it has in common with it's members is it's own existence. People can even post their quiz results. I have the free time to belong, but truly, I find it extracurricular.
The Apples thing really bugs me. I'd love to get involved, but can't find an IC reason to do so (for *any* of my characters! Wenches! All of them!)
